WORKSHOPS AT THE SHOW: 6pm – 7pm!

Written on November 5, 2010 at 3:53 AM, by merely

The Freedom and Fashion 2nd Annual Fashion Show will be held this Saturday, November 6, 2010 in Irvine, CA. It’s a unique event because before the fashion show we’ll be having workshops that will educate you on global social injustices. The speakers will uncover the lucrative trafficking of victims coming across the Mexico border and will discuss how and why our own children are being commercially sexually exploited. What can someone in California do to put an end to modern day slavery in our own backyard and in the world?

Workshop A from 6pm-7pm: “Who are the victims in Southern California and why are they here?”

Sandie Morgan is the Director of the Global Center for Women & Justice as well as teaches Women’s Studies, Family Violence, and Human Trafficking at Vanguard. She recently served as Administrator of the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force in the battle against the modern slave trade and as a Registered Nurse, Sandie has in the past served on the Board of the International Nurses Association in Athens, Greece where she lived for ten years. It was there that she discovered human trafficking while doing a story for Lydia Living magazine and working on reducing violence against women.

Sandra recently received a grant to further address violence against women in Northern Iraq through a partnership to integrate women’s studies at Duhok University. Sandra continues to serve as Founder/Director of the Lydia Today Foundation (www.lydiatoday.org) and Live2Free, a youth mobilization initiative against slavery (www.live2free.org). Sandie guest lectures in universities, community groups, and churches and is presently pursuing a PhD in Intercultural Studies. Sandie has been interviewed by the LA Times articles.latimes.com/2008/01/10/metro/me-parsons10, the OC METRO Business Magazinehttp://www.ocmetro.com/NEW_SITE/metro031308/women.php, the OC Register, and other media. Developing community grassroots awareness is critical to ending slavery. She partnered with other members of the OC Community to produce an awareness video, “The Cost of Demand”, which can be viewed at www.live2free.org. Changing the way we think about the forces that drive demand for human trafficking is her goal. She says, “The modern slave trade is a business fueled by demand. Consequently, to some degree we are all part of the problem or part of the solution. We contribute to demand by turning a blind eye to pornography and sex tourism or by making choices that reward companies that keep their bottom line under the rest of the market by the use of slave labor.”

Sharon Ngai is passionate about the fight against human trafficking, with a strong focus on the sexually exploited. Sharon received comprehensive training on sexual exploitation at Fuller Seminary in 2009. She later had the opportunity to participate with the Dallas Police Department in a prostitution sweep where she learned first-hand about domestic trafficking.

In addition, through training received from Border experts, Sharon has focused her energy on understanding the human trafficking situation at our U.S/Mexican border. Sharon and her team have outreached to exploited women both in Los Angeles, and in Thailand. She has spoken as an advocate on this issue in conferences.

WORKSHOP B from 6pm-7pm: “Over 250 million Migrants, 70% women, No Rights, Modern Day Slavery and Human Trafficking all in China alone”

Brent Fulton, China Source
Priscilla Daeger, Starfish Project
Michael Lew, Faces Behind the Label

Brent of China Source will discuss the need to address the growing migrant population in China and Priscilla will share about her experiences in rescuing women from the sex-slave trade in China. Q&A at the end!

Background & Credentials:

Michael Lew is the Founder and President of Faces Behind the Label, an advocacy organization that spreads awareness about the injustices done to migrant workers through the universal language of the ARTS, fashion, dance, painting and music. He has had more than ten years of experience with producing and developing apparel product all over the world for many retailers in the US.

Priscilla Daeger is one of the founders of the Starfish Project, a shelter that rescues sex-trafficked women in Asia and provides them with an alternate means of income through jewelry-making. Priscilla has worked first-hand with women in the red-light district, rescuing them from a life of prostitution and giving them a new chance at life, free from bondage and abuse. She now oversees jewelry sales in the US, handling inventory and recruiting volunteers to sell the jewelry at churches and craft shows.
